Unionjack145
Hi everyone. New to the forum and looking for some advice on a lean code problem. I had an ECU problem and my garage has done a ECU and lockset swap. The car is a 54 plate 330ci with a Siemens MS43 DME, 5WK90019 7536649. I bought an ECU lockset with identicle part numbers from a 320i as i was told it would run the car, after trying an ECU repair, then another ECU with the same part numbers flashed to the old ECU, did not work. The car starts and runs fine, no rough idle, no misfires, its even returning better mpg than before, [ have had 6 new coil packs ]?. After driving for a few days i got EML light, P0171 & P0174 codes? Car has been smoke tested and the vacume hose on the fuel filter replaced. Over the weekend EML light has returned. Before i keep chasing the problem i was just wondering if anyone knows if the engine maps are the same?, i was told the 2.0 is actually a 2.2 and a 6 cylinder. Could the map be causing the lean codes?, and if so can i get the map from my spare 330ci flashed to the one currently running the car? Thanks in advance. Regards Wayne. momo
Welcome. Bit out of my depth here but just for clarification - when you originally replaced the ECU, did the garage download a "base" map onto it? I believe specialists have access to some BMW network where they can find a copy of a base map for your type of car. That's what they should've done. What was the original reason for the ECU and lockset swap? Seem extremely drastic tbh.. Never heard anyone needing that before on an E46.

The ecu lockset came straight from a 320i, previously when i nearly purchased one from a company online i was told the 320i ecu would run my car. No base map downloaded, just a swap out, the car runs fine with no misfires or rough idle, but is throwing running lean codes. I basiclly need to find out if a 2.2 6 cylinder runs the same engine map as a 3.0 6 cylinder before i start chasing more vacuum leaks etc as the list for these codes can be long so id like to eliminate the ecu. Original ECU had broken and was unrepairable after shorting out and melting a coil pack or vice versa, thiers a few examples of this if you do an internet search, apparently an issue with 54 plate ecu's. momo
OK thanks for clarifying. That's where i'd start then. The 2.2 6cyl shares the same engine code as your 3.0l (the M54 - so double-check yours IS an M54 and the ECU you bought was also from an M54). If so, then i'd take it somewhere to get that base map applied. You'll be running around in circles until you can verify the ECU isn't a problem anymore but you wont know that until you know 100% it's compatible with your car and works with your car. I could be wrong - but any good/decent mapper should be able to tell you if i'm wrong or not. I'm no expert but that's the first port of call for me.
