Cannockwolf
MAF faults usually show themselves by way of lack of power due to the air not being measured properly. You could try unplugging the MAF at idle to see if it helps but this wont really rule anything out. An air leak would however cause a rough idle as would poor mapping. I'm surprised they haven't asked you to go back to them to have it checked over since you've just spent a not inconsiderable amount of cash with them - it's not your job to diagnose the issue it's theirs. they have said come back mate, but its 200 mile round trip and a day ill have to shut the shop, if i can get a quick fix here id prefer that, if it persists then ill take her down
ellisg93
Well my 323 had a faulty MAF and the idle was fine but it used to stutter during gears @ high revs. Replaced MAF, everything was fine after fault code reset. That's a point, if you do decide to test my MAF it would need time to reset or get the fault code cleared wouldn't it? I don't know too much about on the E46s. My friend had a 318 / E46 and he had a MAF issue with idle. Unplugged MAF and did a mile, everything was fine and no more idle issues so he got a new MAF, fixed it. simonlpearce
Don't imagine it would run too good if you unplug the MAF if at all, not even on idle. Borrow another to test it locally and if it solves your problem then job done. I'd still want a follow up visit with the garage though so they can give it the once over now its run in. RickyZ
Why you say that Si, is it cause of the charger ?
B0B
I would imagine its because when the charger is fitted my understanding is they also fit bigger injectors and adjust the fuel map to compensate for the extra air. So to unplug the MAF and revert to a preset standard fuel map would probably do the engine no favours at all. Cannockwolf
simonlpearce
Yep, the charger plus the injectors, the extra air flow depending how its setup to idle etc etc. When mine was temporarily running the charger it would run lumpy and s**t without the MAF plugged in. Edit : Bob beat me to it, just read his post, lol. B0B

The map would revert to running on the base map thats pre-calibrated to run the injector that are fitted and would probably be mainly based upon the closed loop lambda values rather than the MAF values. Fishman68
just took the car out and forgot to put the card back in lol. ill go back out after some lunch gave it the beans though on a very quiet, private road and this took it to the red line, first time id not just played around, even yesterday was just a play, OMG! this thing amazing! starts off normal up to 2k, start to get a definite sense of more power to up 3k, then it really starts to pull! and it never gives up until you have to change, then its in the perfect power band to carry on, my heart started beating really fast the first time i did it lol, not had any roller coaster do that!, tbh it took me by surprise, it just wanted to keep going. The deliver of the power is soooo smooth though, it feels like it came from the factory like this, feels very BMW not some weird hybrid, the charger doesn't really scream though, you can hear it but its not noticeable if you get my meaning. Very happy bunny Hi buddy, a warm welcome to the e46 Ess FI club! :-) glad your happy. Did you find the 200mile breaking in period tough? Fishman68
Just a thought if its not an air leak or MAF defect it may be the s/s idle bypass. I can't recall the exact detailing as it was ages ago when i Installed it myself but there is pipe via the idle bypass module that gets isolated however if CA installed it they should have done it correctly since they install a lot of these system regularly. As piece of mind I've done over 25k miles with this system now on 200k and she's purring like a kitten. Hope you get it sorted. Rebel

The ecu's reporting lean mixture and misfire on all cyclinders, I presume this is the rough idle as its great when being used, it will be something stupid I suppose

Cannockwolf
Bit the bullet and changed the maf, wasnt going to be able drive over leicester for a week minimum and ca made a point that whos to say the maf i swap it with isnt worn out too, also says he swaps his every 40k as a matter of routine?? the idle is better but it hasn't been cold in the morning like it was before, reset the codes and it came back, reset again and so far nothing, so fingers crossed Chimp Choker and Rebel
