Why do you need antivirus? Do you constantly drink cough mixture in case you get a cough too? :)

Not really, since your body learns from previous infections (and those of others in the case of immunisation), and uses antibodies to try to fight any infection. Those are inherent in your body, and you often have no idea of what your antibodies are dealing with or preventing.

Yeah, my brain learns from previous dodgy downloads of software too :)

LOL - if life was only that simple.

I get the whole argument of why have antivirus - but attacks, hacks and other incidents can happen in a wide variety of clever ways and not always due to hang around on the cyber equivalent of dirty street corner or backstreet boudoir.

Lets face it, people do make mistakes, and often click/view/access things that they probably know they should not, or do not have the common sense to realise are not sound.

As a favourite saying sums up, "the more idiot proof you make the system, the better the idoit you produce".

People are idiots, and hence we will always need antivirus and the like. In some instances, you do not have a choice but to use it (work computers etc).

lol I love this debate, it seperates people who really know about security from people who think they do. Let's talk about strong passwords next :)

Agree that making something idiot proof is a good idea if you want to reduce the amount of work for yourself. Some would argue that it's better to increase the amount of work you have in these times of austerity though!

Mit's right, technically if you're a 'smart user' then there's no need for an anti virus. It doesn't hurt to have one though. I have no intention of ever having need for my airbags, but I like to know it's there should the worst happen.

I don't need my airbags either, but it's more trouble than it's worth taking them out. I've had accidents that would have set off an airbag in the olden days if I had an airbag, and got out of the car without a scratch. I think all this health and safety stuff is a load of nonsense and because of all the safety gizmos we've become more detached from the driving experience and less responsible for our actions (and we are basically rolling around in cruise missiles if you think about it).

It should also be more trouble than it's worth taking out antivirus from the operating system, but the EU antitrust regulators won't let anyone do that. Microsoft tried it previously with their conveniently pre-installed web browser and java virtual machine :)

Thing is, I can't really see why you wouldn't want MSE running in the backgruond. It's so light you'd not even notice it's running.
