M54 3 litre. It really is an epic engine

Ok this might be throwing a spanner in the works here, so to speak... But after doing huge amounts of homework on the 330Ci Sport up until finally getting one, i was looking forward to the noise. I have to admit, i was a little disappointed. It just doesn't seem to grunt as much as i expected, but then again, i guess over hyped it with all the research!

have you done the butterfly exhaust mod mate?

That's the trouble with perception mate. These cars were built as a mid range comfortable cruiser that can sprint when required whilst offering a satisfying rumble on startup and kickdown, hence the vacuum flap on the 330ci (open on startup and above 3k revs for more noise, closed when moving below 3k for that refined civilised hum lol Have you done the 'golf tee mod' (disconnecting the vacuum pipe from the exhaust and plugging it)? Should give you a little more rumble :)

Having to appeal to a wide audience I guess manufacturers at this level have to try to appeal to all markets. After all, a car that sounds like a Lambo without the performance to match isn't going to market very well ;)

Agreed with all of the above, wonderfully torquey engine. Having had a 325 and a 328 in the past, the difference is surprising. I get 35mpg average from mine due to the driving I do, but it's nice to be able to drop a cog now and again and ruin said average.

they are so linear in power delivery they often don't feel "quick", and they like to rev, especially if your vanos or cam position sensor (among other sensors) are fubar, the throttle response between knackered and not is light and day. Maybe get a ride in another and compare ?

I'm the opposite, I don't think they are particularly good engines. The have a habit of using lots of oil and they don't sound very good, plus they lack character and don't rev very high. They do return decent mpg, I'll give it that.

I recently had a V6 Alfa GTV, now that's an engine.

I think you misunderstood.. Power is fine. Absolutely love how it lights up when your foot is planted down. I waa more disappointed with the noise... for a 'sport' its no louder then my brother's 318 SE.

Would hazard a guess that your butterfly valve is jammed shut.

My 330Ci is much louder than my brother's 320Ci, albeit I have an induction kit. But it sounds immense. Have been asked a few times what exhaust I have got on.

get a new exhaust then? eisenmann and supersprint are good, although i can only speak for the supersprint, or do you want 'barry corsa' loud lol

haha! no no! I just wanted a more crisp/respry sound really. I have been quoted 230 for a custom backbox and twin tail from J P Exhausts based in Macclesfield. They'll tune the note to be how I like then... that's how frustrated i am at the quietness.

HOWEVER... as soon as I finish work later and walk to the car in the car park.. I'm having a look to see if that damn valve is shut!

it probably is, most have some jamming issues whether open or closed, the supersprint gives more of a bassy sound than crisp, but not boomy. (im making my own words up as i go along here aren't i)

Perhaps, although they were very descriptive words nevertheless!

I'll take a peek at this valve and try and do the Golf Tee Mod later on tonight too. If that doesn't help, i might eventually go down the custom backbox etc route, only i think more lows will come first.

Again, thanks! :)

Whilst it wont give you any more power, and may lose just a touch the BMC Carbon Intake system sounds awesome on mine combined with a very subtle sports exhaust. heel and toe sounds sublime with a little popping and farting on the overun :)

That's interesting. I would actually have said the same about the Alfa V6 engines. I have never owned an Alfa but have driven a couple and whilst not too shabby I didn't think much of the sound or the power output / torque for the capacity. Perhaps it was down to not having spent enough time with the cars... My own 330ci took some getting used to as it is my first flat 6 but I soon got to grips with it and love the power delivery and the sound. True, they don't 'feel' fast but they are in real terms. That straight 6 engine easily fools with its linear power delivery and the chassis is also fairly tight which means you don't get the usual front end hop as you rip through the gears that makes the smaller FWD cars feel so nippy.

I'll be honest, the GTV I had was fitted with a CDA induction kit and a Ragazzon exhaust so maybe it's not fair to compare. It sounded filthy dirty. Preferred it over my old M3 for noise. Power wise they are 220bhp from a 3.0 so pretty much the same as the 330, neither of which are that impressive.

So turns out my exhaust was rusted shut! A trusty spanner shoved down the pipe and a hammer did the job! Took and sealed the pipe.

Took it for a blast, it's certainly louder and do me for now. Love a good free mod. Still thought it would be a little more throaty though!

One of the best mass produced engines BMW has made IMHO. Its everything I thought it was going to be when I was researching it plus its so nice to be able to rev past 5k rpms - really kicks on from about 3k rpms while when tootling along its so wafty down low before picking up mid range and then really pulling towards the top end... Great stuff :) Mine is just over 110k miles now but still gives 32mpg combined and is happy chasing far more expensive metal... As an all rounder it's hard to beat for the money :) in fact there was nothing else that offered the package my 330 could hence why I bought it ;) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Whaaat, 3 pages in on a car forum and no diesel owners piped up?! I'll start then.. m57n>m54. Anybody with an m54 played with an Rx8 (231)? How did it compare?

No it has been raised a couple of times but as its irrelevant to the thread they've been ignored  Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
