MAF readings in INPA

After the other thread about injector values I was curious as to how mine were. Anyway, I noticed something odd with the MAF.

In the winter I replaced the MAF as it was giving bad readings, like the one shown below. On replacing the MAF (genuine BOSCH) it did improve the car in terms of smoothness, power delivery and economy. With it hooked up to INPA earlier I noticed it still had the out of range values.

If the MAF is good, what else could be causing this to be out of range? I have run DIS tests before and I don't remember it saying anything was wrong apart from the disconnected EGR system. Could the EGR cause the MAF readings to be out? (I think when it was first replaced the EGR was still in place, but I'm not sure.) At idle, it sits around 4*0mg, which I thought was a bit high. To my knowledge, the EGR system isn't active at this rev range either, only opening when at higher cruising revs.

When you replaced the MAF did you do a MAF and Lambda adaptation reset? BMW say it is necessary...although I've never swapped a MAF. It can be done in DIS in the adaptation program bit, where incidentally, it also recommends they are both run on MAF or Injector changes.

EDIT: What version of INPA have you got? Mine is the same as Bungers'....

Ah, no, I didn't do the adaptation/reset. I'll try that tomorrow once the laptop's recharged. My understanding was it wasn't needed, but I'm happy to be proved wrong. (I might be thinking to do with the different MAF part numbers, I'm not sure.)

INPA is version 3.01. Do they display differently/different things as I've got a DDE4.0 (M57), whereas you two will have DDE5.0 (M57N)

My screenshots were taken with version 5.0.2, I would imagine there's a difference between the DDE versions.

Ahhh yes, possibly DDE version differences. As for the MAF, it is coding that is only required on some part numbers. That being said, in theory, the adaptations will adjust over time on their own. Maybe it needs a kick?

I'd have hoped 7-8 months was long enough! It's also had the battery disconnected before while I've been working on other things.

I'll try the DIS thing and report back though, and in the mean time INPA 5.0.6 and 6.4.3 are downloading, so hopefully one will upgrade nicely. Will test in a VM first before screwing up my working installation.

Will do. I've seen one link for 6.4.3, which I'm trying too (although it might be mislabelled EDIBAS). I'll let you know/link here either way though :)

Edit, looks like there's a version 9.*.* too. I'll give that a go too. Didn't realise how outdated mine was!

Update - it's installed and working. The version 9 seems to relate to the whole thing/package, it only installs INPA 4.something which is then updated to version 5. It's still newer than what I've got now, so I'll likely stick with it if I can find where the e46 lives!

Looks to be the same version as me now then. E46 should be F3, have you wiped your old INPA folders?

Make sure your INPA.ini (C:\EC-APPS\INPA\CFGDAT) looks like this:

Awesome, updating the ini file fixed it - cheers!

Before it had F10s on the f3 key, but commented out.

Been out and tested it, and it still looks the same as it does above, so maybe the bar formatting is down to the DDE as well?

Still gave the same readings, and I've not found anything in DIS to reset the adaptions, but I did come across this, but I don't know if it'll work on my DDE4.0

I'll try on mine later (sun's super-heating the seats to painful temperatures atm!), but I don't think that option was there under special functions. I'll look and see though.

Mine has been feeling a little hesitant at low revs / off boost, so I decided to do some investigating with INPA

My nominal air mass and actual air mass values are not the same, I know they are never completely identical, but the actual value is considerably higher than the nominal one, so does this mean my MAF is goosed!? :unsure:

Readings are approx:

- Nominal = 356 mg/Hub

- Actual = 485 mg/Hub

The charge air pressure and rail pressure values are very similar for the nominal & actual readings, it's just the air mass one that's way out.

It still drives well though and pulls like a train, just this occasional slight hestiation at low revs, with partial throttle...

Yeah, all back together as it should be, runs better if anything and pulls very well on full chat, it's just this low revs / part throttle hesitation, only very slight and not that noticeable.

Might just leave it...

Have you got DIS? I reckon doing the EGR adjustment program in DIS will cure that - it did mine. Set the value to +40 and see how it is. Note the value before you change it, so you can change it back - likely to be the default of 0.

Got DIS somewhere, but not got it installed, only INPA on this laptop. Is it easy to do?

I removed & cleaned the EGR recently, it was filthy, so this adjustment does sound plausible as now it's clean it's in a different state.

Having said that the hesitation was there before I cleaned the EGR and was the reason for doing it

Found my discs, so going to try the DIS stuff that you mentioned, hopefully that will help, I pressume it's easy to do?

If not, a new genuine Bosch MAF is under £150 anyway, so not that bad >>> http://ukdieselparts.com/bmw0928400529-1.html

Typically my car has the most expensive type LOL
