The inevitable iPhone 5s/c thread

Recommended Posts

What passes as a brand new luxury car in china might not get the juices flowing over here though.

Rolls Royce, Bentley, Mercedes, BMW, JLR, Ferrari, Lamborghini etc.

China is a huge market for a lot of car makers now. Don't you read any car magazines?

I'll be popping down the MK Apple shop next Friday evening to pick up a 32GB 5S in black (why do they call it 'space grey', it looks the same as my black 5?). I normally pre order it so it's delivered to my door & I don't have to see any weirdos at the shop, but they've changed the preorder system for the S for some reason?

They're not the same?

The lack or pre-order seems daft though

I've had Apple products for many years so I'm a huge fan. Apple's philosophy is so different to everyone else's & for me this is what makes them what they are. I'm writing this on my 2013 Mac & next to it is a 2004 iBook G4 which is in perfect working order. The operating systems are very similar between the two & this is in effect Apple's philosophy of retaining customers in the very long term whilst providing a superior quality product that is a pleasure to use.

I've had an iPhone 4 since its launch, it's in brand new condition, and using IOS7 since July. There isn't another manufacturer that supports & updates what is in effect a 4 year old phone with their brand new operating system & FREE!

Apple cannot "reinvent the wheel" every year as no doubt people expect but its certain that some great products are on the way, like the iWatch.

I will be getting the 5S in space grey not because there is anything wrong with my 4 but because the list of improvements justifies it. I didn't get the iPhone 5 because I felt that there weren't enough changes compared to the 4.

i'm glad they've kept the screen the same size as you can still fully use it with one hand, something that I cant do with the Samsung S4. if I want a bigger screen to surf the web, I use my iPad mini.

I don't get this constant need to make the screen bigger. It's a device I carry for convenience and needs to be compact. I still have an iPhone 4S because I don't like the (moderate) size increase of the 5. To my eye, it's visually out of proportion as well. If the width increased by the same percentage as the height, it would look a lot better. Just a bit big...

I'm probably going to skip the 5s and see what the 6 looks like. If that grows in size, I'll be hanging onto my 4s for a lot longer.

As for the 5c, that needed to be in the £250 to £300 price bracket to make any real difference. It's still too expensive to take customers from Samsung etc.

Ian.

I agree that the iPhone 4/4s is the ideal screen size for me. I simply don't get the size of the Samsung phones. I would be embarrassed sticking that thing next to my ear in public... The 5/5s are not as bad and I would upgrade if my 4 was failing but it is still a very good working phone, so why?

I also agree with the simplicity and efficiency of Apple products. I am forced to use Windows machines in my laboratory due to software restrictions and I am reminded constantly that Windows has compromised convenience for stability. Yes, I like quite a few of the quirks and accessibility of Windows but it is a system I cannot rely on and one that has cost me a fair bit of productivity.

Still rocking my iPhone4, so tempted by the 5S.

I'm still on a 3GS, need a new phone now lol - lack of a flash doesn't half get on my tits.

I agree with the first bit, wouldn't want a screen much bigger than my 3GS, I had a go of my brother's Nokia Lumia and I thought the screen was just slightly too big to use with one hand.

They increased the height only to make the screen the right proportions for a 16:9 ratio, this way video both on it and taken by it are standard.

Hi,

Bungers - It's not rocket science really, car manufacturers have been 'naming' their colours for decades - Imola red, Le Mans Blue, Oxford Green.. so other industries are doing the same...

George - As per above, other markets have different tastes and the preference for larger screens is heavily in demand and favoured. I've just picked up a Samsung Galaxy Mega with a 6.3 inch screen! 90% of it's use is indeed as a tablet and limited phone calls on it for now (my 2nd line) I was just about to purchase the Asus FonePad for £170 from Carphone Warehouse but I'm glad I paid the extra for the Mega, it's much smaller, lighter and slimmer so suits me and the use I have for it perfectly.

China is a massive market, if any of you are involved or ever do international business etc, quite a lot of manufacturers and product exporters openly say that they can't be bothered with the 'tiny' UK market as they really don't to sell here for their products - I'm not talking about obscure product lines either, but brands doing/selling really well in other markets/territories for them. That came as bit of a shock when I heard/saw that a few years ago now! Remember the Top Gear episode when they looked at Chinese home market car manufacturers? and their laughable design and 'copy' of popular cars in the West? granted, for the average Chinese person, that's what they can afford and will go for, but China's massive middle class want better products and from Western brands. The demand is so great, that they produce that Long wheelbase version of the 3 series specifically for the Chinese market !

Onto the iPhone thing, very popular for sure and a quality, premium product all round. To those who like the Apple direction, it's great. Not everyone agree's and thus purchase other tech instead. I'll most likely never buy a brand new Apple product ever, I thankfully got my iPod 4th Gen model at a discounted price I was just about happy with and Apple don't offer anything else I want. The latest iteration of the iPhone of course has changes inside and technically for which credit is due. The pricing is that of what Apple are, a premium brand aimed at the more affluent members of society/markets and they'll sell plenty of them. Is it 'enough' to combat the growth and rise and popularity of the Android OS? time will tell. I'm probably going to change my main phone from Android to Windows Mobile - shock horror!

As ever, the internet is awash with the whole Apple Vs Android thing, in short, just buy the handset you like and suits your needs as everyone has different requirements and expectations etc as well as wallet depth !

Lastly, one thing I'm going to be watching at Apple, is what they do with their 'iOS in the car' variation that quite a few OEM car manufacturers have committed to from next year. Hoping to get 'some' insider information soon through industry channels about it :)

Cheers, Dennis!

Looks like ill be keeping the 4s for music and buying a nokia 1020 or 925.

quick question guys.

o2 refresh have advertised that

Your Airtime Plan:

Unlimited Minutes

Unlimited Texts

1GB Data

£17.00

Your Phone Plan:

You'll have a one of cost of £600.00 and 24 monthly payments of £0.00

£17.00

(Your Airtime Plan + Phone Plan)

Today you'll pay 1 upfront cost payment of £600.00

£17 x 24 =£408 divide by 2 =£ 204

204 + 600 = £804 over the year

but if I buy the phone on payg its

£449.00

Sim only plan 12 months £21= £252

£252 + £449 = £701

how do they work that out

i mean who in the right mind wouldnt want the cheaper deal.

Option 1 is over 2 years so the actual cost per year is £504.

If you kept the second contract for 2 years it would be £476.50 a year so not much in it, however, option one would have an upgrade after 2 years so is the one to go for IMO.

I think the new one has a flash again lol... And the Samsung galaxy camera and that new Sony one.

And android phones can still do flash.

Indeed they might "call" it a flash, but it's not a flash. It's an LED light, not the same.

Which ones ? My Note 2 didn't, my One doesn't either. Edited by Daz 330 Cs

The price between the 5c and 5s seems way off to me, especially when you consider I bought my HTC One for less than their "budget" 5c which seems to be a much superior package from what I can see at this moment in time.

I went with the HTC simply for the fact I found the S4 to still be lacking build quality and the screen was just the wrong side of gigantic, HTC struck the balance for my needs.
