Dr T
i guess the issue is, while you pay that amount for insurance, and have a piece of paper that checks out, i suspect that in the event of needing to claim, you'll find that your cover is probably invalidated by your breaching of the terms and conditions, lets face it insurance companies always try to get out of paying up and if there's any element to your details that doesnt check out then they'll find it and use it as a reason not to pay, so if you've not disclosed that the car is based in this country every day of the year when it is, they'll find out and wont pay out. So to all intents and purposes, for anyone you hit, you may as well be an uninsured driver. Obviously no one here knows if you're disclosing everything or believe you're playing the system and using a loop hole while honestly believing you are still covered. out of interest, is it a UK insurance company you use or do you insure it in the country of registration and that cover extends to your driving in the UK? mjn
silly question, but can you really register a car in another country without any proof it's been exported? what do you need, just a foreign address that you can claim to live at for a certain amount of time and still pick up post from, such as a parents address? How do you insure it, via a company based in the country its registered in or do you have to use a uk insurance company as its based here all the time? Eastern Europe.....its like the Wild West. mit
Friend of mine has just imported her BMW X3 from the Canary Islands. She had to pay £1700 VAT (it's a tax haven there and a 2006 car) but she was able to insure it with Admiral on the Spanish plate. She has to fit headlamps from a RHD car to have it MOT'd here, as she needs that to get a UK number plate and road tax. Keeping it on Spanish plates isn't an option as the car has to spend 60% of the time in Spain to qualify for the Spanish version of tax and MOT. Pretty sure that rule is similar for other European countries. So anyway my advice is don't buy the sticky fixings from Halfords though. My plate almost fell off yesterday! It's not as good as the stuff they used to sell a few years ago! And good luck collecting all those eurotunnel frequent traveller points on the car you legitimately registered in a foreign country and told your insurer you keep out of the country for more than a month in the year just so you can avoid paying speeding and parking fines. There's no point bitching and moaning about this either report it officially or what's the point? I do agree with what's been said though. I had an e38 about 18 months ago, 740i top spec, bought it for £400 with tax and test but fcuked head gasket, I broke the car and made over £2k in parts result! Frobius
'Exported' then registered in Estonia, where it is of course fully taxed and insured?? I don't need emoticons, I don't need sarcasm, I don't need to convey an alternate meaning in what I am about to say: That car is as bent as a nine bob note. Stay very clear and if you see it, I'd suggest reporting t to the police. They'll be very interested in what is basically fraud and would take pleasure in sending it to the crusher. Shame as it's otherwise a nice car. And what's with all this 'Feds' sh*t?? Are you some sort of wannabe American 'gangsta'?? You realise that the term Feds relates to American federal law enforcement agencies, such as the DEA, FBI, ATF etc. A, we aren't American. B, we don't have a federal government, and C, if we did, it would be the NCA you'd have referred to, which clearly aren't going to give a toss about your uninsured, untaxed, R reg BMW being nicked off the street. So that means it was people from a territorial policing team who dealt with your 'mishap'/'insurance scam' - generally just referred to as 'the police'. Grow up ffs and start following the rules. Frobius
Well it's pretty bloody obvious that you can't legally do that, otherwise we'd all be at it. Even f you did exactly as you've said and exported the car properly and re-registered it in Estonia where it's insured etc, the very fact you're keeping it in the uk and not actually resident in Estonia means it's illegal. You might get away with it in the short term but I reckon the first time you're stopped, that thing will be seized. How do you plan to prove that you're resident in Estonia and that you've only been in the uk for less than 6 months? As soon as they start unravelling that one, "you're nicked sunshine". My money is on, told the Dvla that it was exported (maybe) and then just got some old fake plates off a foreign car and stuck them on. No parking tickets, no tax and no speeding fines. Jail?? Frobius
Christ, it's almost as bad as that "business edition" guy on E90post. Share with the class that story http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=885240 You have to read the linked threads too. Basically, the guy started off by asking how to rig covert blue lights behind his grilles and in his tail lights. "It's only for shows, honest." He gets slated. Then a bit later he comes on asking how to deal with a NIP he's received for street racing. "I wasn't racing, I was just in the wrong place going really fast behind another car that might have been racing me." Gets slated some more, Then to top it all off, someone spots him running a red light at like 80 in a 40 and it's quickly identified as this guys car. As expected, "it wasn't me, yo". But best yet, he then claims that he rents his car out to people all the time yet has no idea who to or how long for. Gets utterly ruined. Well worth a read to be honest. Start with the lights, then the racing, then the nutter thread above. Edited October 11, 2013 by Frobius Rebel

Naaaah mate, it's all legit innit bruv! calm down a bit ok ?. Go on call the police and report me if you want and if you are such a big man. Just for your info i am an Estonian resident as i was born there hold an Estonian passport and got a permanent address back there. The car is legitimately registered , MOTd , and insured in Estonia , also have a green card which allows me to use the car all over the EU. As for the speeding and parking fines - NO you are wrong all the speeding fines are send to my home address in Estonia and yes they can not put a PCN on a foreign registered car hence why they tow it away. This happened to me once cuz i parked on a resident only and next minute i found out that my car has been towed away ...ended up paying silly money to get my car back Edited October 11, 2013 by Vas
