shannon325
Hey guys I have searched the forum etc and asked friends but thought I'd see what you guys think before I go ordering a service kit for my 2001 325ci! I've had a couple of 2.5s now and I know that BMW recommend Castrol 5w-30. How ever, I've been told by a few mates before that a BMW that has done over 100k that using 10W-40 is best as it's thicker? My mileage is 119,500. Can anyone back this up? My old coupe you to drink so much oil, and I don't want this one going the same way! Also, am I right in thinking that it takes 6.5L? So, what's the best oil to get? Many thanks in advance Shannon
Jay.
Yeah go for 10 40 to slow consumption down & id recommend castrol too
marc l
I wouldn't use 10w/40 personally. Bmw recommend Castile edge and that's what I've been using for 4 years without any problems [emoji3] 0-30 and 5-30 is what most people use
the_driller
5-40 here Just use whatever makes you happy im past the using premium oils in my life now. It'll last long enough on cheapo oil Sent from my GT-I9500 using Tapatalk 2 StuBeeDoo

L4nky808
I only use Castrol Edge 0w30 or 5w30 in mine but I'm Anal like that - I'm a firm beleiver that oil is your engines blood... You wouldn't put the wrong blood in your body! Saying that, my car is only on 108k, and should hopefully still be worth something by the time I sell it on 115-120k, plus I'd like the satisfaction of knowing I'd sold on a vehicle that would be well maintained & prove reliable for the following owner . If it was on 180k plus I'd probably put cheap and cheerful in as it would be worth a pittance by the end of my ownership, and IMO wouldn't justify the cost of premium oil vs. Resale value as long as it lasted for the 2/3 years I actually owned it. Jay.
As Lanky says, put good oil in & it'll look after you. However as you know mines a £500 snotter on 150k miles so i'm not as anal as I used to be with my 5k 330ci facelift with 100k on
Trevor
I'm about to change my oil, ordered it today. That's twice this year. Every 6 months or so since I bought it. Currently only doing 7500 miles a year. I would rather buy approved good oil and change more frequently than the dashboard tells me. Rob-
Coming up to colder weather, 5w40 would be the best compromise between cold start protection and slowing down oil consumption. Fully synthetic. LL01 should suffice on a 2001 car, LL04 didn't exist when the engine was developed after all. StuBeeDoo

jayla
I have used castrol edge 0w30 past 4 years but this time I used shell 5w40 just because its cheaper then castrol one and is LL01 still. My oil gets changed every 2 years which I know is not good but it does not do much miles and still never passes the service indicator on dash
