sparklyman
I'm new to the E46, so this is a great video, but @ 12:14 you fit the new gasket to the cylinder head, the cut to 12:42 to fit the cover, but the gasket has gone ? Is the gasket best fitted to the cover, rather than the head ? Great video format - steady, no chat or music - 1st class. R11CH
Always fit the gasket to the cover first then carefully position it on the head. Make sure the spark plug gaskets do not fall out the cover while placing it into postion. portugaldrc
MangoMan
Hi PTdrc. Can you tell me why you needed to replace the Gasket? What symptoms did you have please? Thanks. ps. Nice Video! portugaldrc
ibrahimx2001
I'm doing this to mine hopefully tomorrow. I have oil seeping through and filling up the spark plug holes. I'm also getting a strong smell of burning oil when I drive it hard. portugaldrc
MangoMan
The reason I asked is that just lately, (in the last week or so) if the car has been sitting for a couple of days I've noticed a very slight bit of smoke coming up from the rear of the Engine on the Exhaust side. Only lasts a maybe a minute after the motor has been running for a couple of minutes, and as I say, only if I haven't used it for a couple of days. Would you say that this is the culprit..? This is the best photo I could manage to take....
ibrahimx2001
It's quite difficult to say. Easiest thing I can advise if check around the valve cover to see if there is any oil/grease. Just run your finger around the v cover MangoMan
R11CH
Would be the gasket for sure. Mine would create lots of smoke for the first 4-5mins of running due to it sitting all week and i would even get it on long steep inclines. New gaskets sorted it. MangoMan
Thanks Rich.... I was thinking of getting this one from ECP - £20.99 with 30% Discount: http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/BMW_3+Series_2.5_1999/p/car-parts/engine-parts1/engine-parts/car-gasket-seals/?368110300&1&795f7483c3a700c19cfc39db9310649d9b5a2111&000541 I've always had good stuff from ECP. What you reckon?
R11CH
Bmw only for this one bud, seen so many use the cheaper ones and end up replacing it again a few miles down the road. Its not expensive from Bmw either. avalaugh and MangoMan

What you reckon? I used one from ECP and it was fine when I sold the car 1 year / 10k later. I have since heard the non genuine ones don't last as long though. Has your engine ever overheated? 90% of the time a failed gasket will cause your symptoms due to oil leaking down onto the exhaust heat shielding and burning off. The rear moon shape parts of the valve housing is pretty prone to this. The other 10% of the time however is due to a warped cover itself. Theyre only plastic so easily get bent out of shape if overheated, hence oil will easily escape. Ive had both happen to me and had to do this job many times. Oh, and btw, NEVER buy anything other than an original bmw gasket. The aftermarket ones are thinner and badly made so 9 times out of 10 youll be doing the job again in a year or so. Daz 330 Cs
As above. It's not wise to buy stuff like this from ECP. Dealers only and do the job properly, once.
Mugs
I recently replaced my cover and gasket. I bought the first gasket from Ecp and although it didn't actually leak I ended up buying a replacement cover with new gasket from BMW as it turned out my cover was cracked. The difference with the Ecp gasket and the genuine is night and day. I would only use a genuine gasket if I was to do it again. I bought the gasket and the bolt seals and in total it was only about £60. The gasket without the bolt seals is, I believe, only about £38. Daz 330 Cs
I really can't fathom why people would skimp on parts like this. Do you use newspaper to wipe your crease with too ? ibrahimx2001

Trust me Thanks for the info and advice. Appreciated. As far as overheated, not to my knowledge. Also it's only started as of late, and not all the time. Sometimes can go for days without it smoking, and even then it is just a whiff. And I've never had to top up the oil yet in over 4 months. I will keep an eye on it and if it gets any worse I'll replace the Gasket with an Original one. Thanks again.
