Space Saver on E46??

Recommended Posts

Hi all.. I currently have a puncture on the rear wheel (255/35 18) and the car is on my driveway.

I believe my tyre place up the road can get me a tyre in for Monday at 12-3pm... (Phoned loads locally and no one has one in that size bar a £70 budget which I don't really want.)

I have work on Monday - Friday,

So my plan was to get the space saver on to allow me to get to work on Monday (Approx 50 miles if I avoid the motorway.) Leave early and get my tyre fitted Monday afternoon.

Just googled 'Space savers' and there are literally tons of people stating how awful they are, getting nicked for using them, unsafe for the motorway, messes up your differential and drive, messes up your TCS/ABS, obviously it will be going on the rear. Braking distances will double etc...

I've never used one before, and I can imagine they are properly s**t, but are they really that bad? Is my car going to damage itself or instantly combust by using one? Max of 50mph mine is rated..

Cheers guys.

(Unless anyone local has a spare wheel I can borrow...!)

good job it was the rear,as they dont fit on the front ,you have to swap back wheel onto front, then put space saver on the rear, sure thats the case anyhow, sure ive read that before.,how quick is your tyre going down, can you not inflate it and drive to work, then inflate it again, ive done that a few times

I'm fairly sure they fit the front as well. I doubt BMW would fit a spare wheel that was good to replace half your wheels

As for the use of them, no issues at all. I've had a couple of punctures over the last 5/6 years and never had any problems at all. Of course the grip isn't going to be as good as it's only half the width. As long as you don't drive like an end of bell you'll be fine. ;)

Thanks lads.. got it on... should be a crime, my car looks like a cat that has been in a car accident and missing a leg.

Only driven back from the garage but I have work tomorrow with 6 miles of the M25, going to be a lorry's bitch. I'll flash them all to let them in though. :D

Pumped up to 60 psi... crazy little things!

Cheers.

Heh. Must be the season for it. Mines sitting on the drive on a spacesaver on the rear. Space saver is less than half the width of the MV2 on the back! I've played it safe and used the other car today. New pair of rear tyres booked in for tomorrow :)

Which ones are you going for dontpannic? I need 2 aswell, but the other has around 2.5mm of tread on...so will do a few skids first and get one in a few weeks :)

I've gone for the Goodyear F1 eagle 2's as I have the Goodyear F1 1's on the front. £134 fitted seemed a good deal. Don't realise just how fat a 255 tyre is on the back, same as a C63 AMG!

Nexen N8000 - it's a midrange tyre my local garage had in stock. £170 for the pair, fitted and balanced. Didn't want a budget tyre for obvious reasons, but can't justify the cost for a 'premium' brand (being disappointed with Pirelli on my Fiesta, and Continental on the BMW).

Yeah, the 255's are so wide! First time I've really studied the rear wheel when I took it off, huge!

you got two eagle as 2 fitted for £134.thats seams very cheap.as the cheapest online are £75 each without fitting for a 225-40-18,was that for 255-35-18,or did you mean per tyre

No rasa mate that's for 1 tyre fitted balanced etc. Also 255/35 R18. The continentals they recommended were £207... EACH !

yeh, thought so,ive got goodyear eagle on the rears, but i just put 225 on as i had two brand new ones spare, and my rear is a 9 j,still look ok ,just a little stretch,i did have nankkang all round and i find them good value and not a ditch finder tyre, busy refurbing a genuine set of mv2,going to put them on here in a few weeks for sale,as i like my after market wheels in gloss black
