The_Judge_
So, I've got an XTrons unit, it's fine, it does everything I need but it's pretty slow. Having had my fair share of cheap Android phones and tablets I know the problem is not how may processors - it's RAM. Android is bloated. The main use I have for these units is: Sat Nav (google Maps), radio and bluetooth for calls/music, reverse camera. Everything else is meh . Any recommendations on >1GB RAM devices worth looking into? Decent screen resolution would be a bonus (and DAB) I want to spend no more than £300 as the car is not worth much now. I figure if the car does die in the next 12 months or so, I'll move the unit into another E46 .... Edited April 19, 2017 by The_Judge_
dontpannic
To be fair, I have an Erisin 1Gb RAM model and I've modified the ROM to make it much less bloated. I've cut out all Google Play services, all unncessary services and apps and it runs quite a lot faster now. I don't get Google Maps with that (relies on the Play Services) but use iGO for navigation. It's also worth re-signing old APK files from apkmirror of the apps you use. I'm using Spotify V1.5 (a really early build) which works fine, and a lot faster than the new, bloated versions. dontpannic
Yeah, absolutely. It's whether the outcome from an hours work is enough to justify another £200-£300 on another unit, for me with the modifications I've made (and I enjoy the challenge) it wasn't worth me looking at a new unit given how this one now performs day to day. XDA is probably your best place to look at replacement units though, I think it's a bit of a minefield with new processors and MCU's. xelad
Google Play services is the killer, its really easy to get rid of all the bloatware without re-flashing or modding the ROM by just installing Titaniam, you can freeze out everything you dont want in about 2 minutes. My Erisin unit was a slug until i disabled all of the Google Play stuff, like dontpannic said though you will have to find another navigation app. Edited April 21, 2017 by xelad
The_Judge_
I assume you don't need google pay services for Waze? I'm quite fussy about sat nav programs .. Also, on a previous ROM I had on the tablet I could change the resolution of the screen through fake software jiggery pokery - anyone know how I can do this? Because of poor choices when I bought my unit - I'm quite limited in the number of ROMS I can use on mine .... Atleast this one I'm using now is stable and takes next to no time to boot up. dontpannic
You can issue the command via terminal: wm size 1024x600 however I'm not sure how that would work on these devices. I'll try Waze on my unit this afternoon and see if it works without Google Play services.

You might have tried it already, but 'Here' maps is pretty good. Totally free - allows you to download/save maps offline too. I used it for rich context navigation around Canada where the TomTom wasn't able to easily browse the map or search by building/site names. I didn't have 3g/4g, and it was pretty good at finding stuff and navigating quickly and accurately. It does do traffic too if internet connected. Not as powerful as waze, but still nice to have something kicking around for when you're without internet (I've got the UK maps saved on my phone for such times ) Edited April 21, 2017 by TriggerFish The_Judge_
