TomShurmer Posted September 15, 2017 Report Share Posted September 15, 2017 Hi All, I purchased an 2002 E46 320D around 1 month ago, when purchased from the dealer it was belching out a grey-ish/black smoke and I was told by the dealer, a BMW "Specialist" that the smoke would clear as it was a result of the car standing for too long. It did somewhat however it is still happening, a lot, and it's driving me crazy, it's had a full service via BMW, I have ran several tanks with various diesel additives, I have had the EGR valve off personally and cleaned it thoroughly, the car has only done 80,000 miles so I'm stuck for ideas. I find it very embarrassing how every time I put my foot down everyone within two miles is turned into coal! I have attached a video of the problem I hope I can find some help! Also, the car pulls well however when asking it to pull at lower revs it feels like I'm pushing the throttle on and off for a few seconds and then it goes, this can be stopped by pressing the accelerator harder, when I'm trying to accelerate gently though it is very hesitant to go! TriggerFish Posted September 16, 2017 Report Share Posted September 16, 2017 I can't see the video, but it could be that it's had a remap on it that's causing it to smoke more (injecting more fuel), or it could have a boost leak - this was mine when I had a hole in one of the boost pipes... momo Posted September 17, 2017 Report Share Posted September 17, 2017 (edited) So long as its not blue smoke it's fine! They all do it when you accelerate hard to some degree.. If it's really excessive like TriggerFish posted above then it's something to look at. Martin2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Report Share Posted October 5, 2017 (edited) I had smoke come out of mine, and also had the issue with the throttle.
