Smoke driving me crazy!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I purchased an 2002 E46 320D around 1 month ago, when purchased from the dealer it was belching out a grey-ish/black smoke and I was told by the dealer, a BMW "Specialist" that the smoke would clear as it was a result of the car standing for too long. It did somewhat however it is still happening, a lot, and it's driving me crazy, it's had a full service via BMW, I have ran several tanks with various diesel additives, I have had the EGR valve off personally and cleaned it thoroughly, the car has only done 80,000 miles so I'm stuck for ideas. I find it very embarrassing how every time I put my foot down everyone within two miles is turned into coal! I have attached a video of the problem I hope I can find some help! Also, the car pulls well however when asking it to pull at lower revs it feels like I'm pushing the throttle on and off for a few seconds and then it goes, this can be stopped by pressing the accelerator harder, when I'm trying to accelerate gently though it is very hesitant to go!

I can't see the video, but it could be that it's had a remap on it that's causing it to smoke more (injecting more fuel), or it could have a boost leak - this was mine when I had a hole in one of the boost pipes... (In the Czech Republic - hence the wrong side of the road - not just reckless!)

So long as its not blue smoke it's fine!

They all do it when you accelerate hard to some degree.. If it's really excessive like TriggerFish posted above then it's something to look at. Otherwise enjoy the drive (and being able to cover tailgaters in a big black cloud of smoke! )

I had smoke come out of mine, and also had the issue with the throttle. Had a decat put on today, they found a hole in the 2nd catalyst, welded it up, now I have less smoke and better throttle response!( might be the decat😁)
