DRAHCRO
Hi All, Looking for some advice please... Recently purchased a 2005 BMW 330ci Auto. After driving the BMW back home from the dealer the ABS and Traction Control symbols appeared on the dash. Left it a few days then one day when driving back from work, I came out of a round-a-bout at normal speed and put my foot down as normally would then the car lost power for a few seconds and then the same thing happened again a few times before I made it home, not just when cornering but also on straights. Took it to to nearest approved BMW garage and asked them for a diagnostics, they said two new driveshafts were required as the existing driveshafts had "swollen" and have a considerable amount of rust on both sides. In addition, the mechanic was saying due to an increased air gap on the rear drivers side it is throwing the whole system out of sync. Took it to another garage for a second opinion who also mentioned the driveshafts however said I should try new abs sensors to start - which worked perfectly for around three weeks... no issues at all, no symbols on the dash, no loss of power. Then a few days ago, coming round a corner the traction control symbol and loss of speed came on once more. Anyway, in a bit of a dilemma - I'm worried that if I pay for two new driveshafts.... Circa 1k later that this may not fix the problem or.... it could be another component at a fraction of the cost that could resolve this issue. From a few other posts, I have seen comments saying about getting driveshafts refurbished? Im based in the Kent area and would appreciate any advice, past experiences or a few pointers on what I should do. - Was considering taking it into BMW's main dealership and asking for another diagnostics but assume the results will come out the same as the original diagnostics. Thanks for the help in advance.
incredirog
it’s probably a corroded abs ring, if you can get underneath to have a look check out immediately behind the brake shield. it looks like a cog, this is where the abs sensor reads the wheel speed. might be worth cleaning with a wire brush. rasa
99% reluctor rings,,as said it reads the signal(sensor). the rings expand wen corroded, there is a solution of putting a little rubber washer/spacer between the sensor and frame,,or getting new rings,,also maybe a new sensor as it may have rubbed against the ring and be to worn down..i have a little traction issues on my e90 330d,,ive had bad sensors on my e46 330d also and yours doesnt sound like just a bad sensor..rings are cheap,,its the labour to remove the drive shaft.sometimes the hub nut is corroded on,,shouldnt be more than 3 hour job max though for new rings both sides.. momo
Worst case - buy some used/2nd hand shafts. I did. Never fit them in the end as my existing ones were fine and still have them, but wont fit a 330i Auto so i've been told.. If you're going to go through the trouble of getting the rings replaced - get the bearings done too. Wont add much more to the labour cost. It'll be less labour to just replace the shafts though as you don't have to split the ring from the shaft and replace rings etc.. Got mine for £100 for the pair. It'd just be a case of removing and re-fitting (not a small job by any means). This is what they look like: The ABS ring is on the left so doesn't matter if the shaft has swollen. So long as it's not excessively corroded, therefore weaker. They're powdercoated I think so sometimes that coating can come away.
