Diy Bulkhead Trim Removal And 330d Air Filter Replacement

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My first write-up here so please bear with me..

Right, here's my little guide on how to remove the bulkhead trim first (as I couldn't find one at all) then i'll move onto the Air Filter..

1) Firstly, open your bonnet, you should find this :)

Remove the engine cover now or later - its up to you. Its just 5 screws and really straight forward so I wont go into that.

2) Look at the back of the engine bay in the middle - thats the pollen filter housing. Rotate the 3 screws highlighted in the above picture a quarter turn clockwise to undo them. Lift the front of the cover and just pull it towards you to remove it.

3) Lift the pollen filter and pull towards you to remove. Just behind it you will find 4 torx srews highlighted in green. Undo these (they wont come all the way out so just loosen them).

There's some cables running along the front of the trim so just open it up and unclip these from the cover.

You can remove the rubber trim from the top if you want to make it a little easier (highlighted in blue)

Now, lift the whole unit up and again pull towards you. It should come out.

It should now look like this:-

Thats the bulkhead trim gone!

Now onto the air filter:-

1) There are 8 screws holding the air filter cover in place (highlighted in red above). Undo all of these. The 3 screws at the top of the main cover will not come all the way out so dont worry about losing them. The 4 lower ones will come out so put these somewhere safe. There is an extra screw under the side-cover of the air filter so ensure you've undone that one too!

2) Remove the air filter side-cover (blue arrow) to see the condition of the current air filter:-

3) To remove the air filter take off the Oil filler cap, lift the cover as high as it will go (I couldn't get the air filter out first on mine due to the cables running along the bulkhead trim). So lift it as high as it will go, then undo the air filter from the nozzle thing toward the front of the engine (hands got too dirty at this point to take more photos, sorry all! lol).

You should just have enough room to pull it out.

4) Once you have the filter out, pull out the cover. While its out give the housing a good clean as there will probably be all sorts of crap in there. I had a few dead wasps and insects in mine ;)

5) Now to install your replacement I found the easiest way to do it is to feed the new filter and the housing back in at the same time.

Clip it back in, screw everything back into place and you're done!

Again, sorry for the lack of photos towards the end.. I'll try get some more next time I do it! lol.

Anyway, hope it was of some help! :D

No worries mate! Was a fun 40-odd mins.. lol.

I tell ya something - I never realised how low down these engines are! My back's still killing me from when I did this on Saturday!! lol.

Anyway, I might be able to get a few more pics next weekend as the cars getting an oil change done - i'll probably do the filter myself when I get it back as the garage might have their hands full fitting my springs all day.. lol.

Anyway, i'll update it with more pics if i get the chance :)

Hi - my local garage removed the bulkhead trim to remove and DE-FLAP my inlet manifold. In the process, they also removed the plastic surround that covers where the windscreen wipers are secured ( at base of windscreen ). They broke off one or 2 of the plastic plugs and the plastic trim does NOT now sit flush against the windscreen. B)

My question is does this matter i.e. should it be water tight, or will rain drain out anyway?

P.S. De-flapping went well otherwise! :D

Thanks, Currybum

Hi CurryBum! Welcome to the zone!

I'm pretty sure they need to be water tight as it'll channel the water to the drain holes in the bulkhead to get rid of the water.. I'm pretty sure you can get replacement plastic plugs/screws from BMW at the very least.. Might be best to open it up yourself to see what broke where and get replacements..

Glad to hear the De-flapping went well!

Was thinking about doing the same with mine too.. We'll see..
