cjohnson
Hi all. Basically I'm thinking of having full stainless system made for my touring. I already have an ecotune front decat pipe fitted, and the rest of the system is standard. I'm after a nice sound from the 6 cylinder and a nice tip to tidy up the rear end. So my question to you lot is, do I get both smaller cats removed? Do I only have one box fitted to the system or two? Do I keep it as a two pipe system or carry it on as one pipe from the already fitted front decat? Opinions and ideas please . Regards Carl. cjohnson
Oh yeah I know that mate, but I don't really know what would make the best noise, or the loudest noise etc. Basically the sound of an eisenmann haha
Rich_D
Well the Eisenmann is just a backbox, so most of the original exhaust and both cats are still in place, bear that in mind If you fully de-restrict the exhaust it will sound similar to this >>> Which is awesome, but not for me as a daily driver! cjohnson
Jesus christ that sound immense! haha, but like you say I don't know whether I could live with that every day, plus my son is due in 3 weeks! lol. Smokey smokey that!
CharlE46
Mine has had a decat fitted along with centre box and rear baffled removed (previous owner) and M3 tips welded on (needs adjusting to fit 100%). I'm not convinced the rear baffles have been removed though as it's that quiet I think it's stalled every time I come to a junction LOL - I have come from a 320d though and they do sound like a tractor, I'll watch this thread with interest as I too would like a nice exhaust note. From what I've read so far the best (if you've got the budget) are the Blueflame back box, the Eisenmann or the full system from BCS powervalve L333JSA has the full system fitted Below is an attempt at getting what mine sounds like on audio if your interested, nothing exciting as it was the first time I'd ever done anything like this. Max revs (engine was warm) was 4,500rpm but just concious of my neighbours Edited July 20, 2013 by CharlE46
CharlE46
That CSL is a pure beast, I did find the German supplier of the system along with special diffusers to suit a non M & M bumpers. Wasn't cheap though and you'd get slated on here for a quad setup LOL MILLER_102

Just an Eisenmann backbox sounds louder in fact... Also, the Blueflame exhaust is a full system, not just a backbox, they are still available new CharlE46
cjohnson
Charl, cheers for that, I'd like it to be louder than that though if I could achieve it! The eisenmann makes a very nice noise! I phoned poweflow at morecambe yesterday. I asked for a rough quote on a system from the front cat (As I've already decatted it), straight through to a back box with twin exit tale pipe. Said it would be around £250-£300. I think this is a reasonably cheap price! I know powerflow get a bad rap most of the time but I've been to this one a few times for systems making and they've always been fine!
momo
Thought about Zorstec in Shipley?
L333JSA
Pay the little bit extra and go to BCS and have a proper job done - also you get a 3" downpipe with their system too.
cjohnson
Momo, there's a couple of local places I'm going to get in touch with this week before booking it in anywhere. There's zorstec, RW performance in Keighley, and MD engineering in Cononley. Both really good at what they do!! I have looked at them systems mate, look a fair piece of kit! If I was to go elsewhere though, would it run ok on a one pipe system the same size as the ecotune decat? (2" or 2.5"?) Not sure what size it is) Or would I still need to keep it as two pipes due to the size of it? Cheers.
Rich_D
Some systems (i.e. Blueflame) are still twin pipes like the original, other systems (i.e. BCS) are are a single pip, so you can have either TBH Pics of Lee's BCS one >>> http://www.e46zone.com/forum/topic/40926-3-turbo-back-stainless-exhaust-system/
L333JSA
I would only go single pipe if it was at least 3" - otherwise stick to the twin style otherwise it may start to restrict things slightly. Rich_D
CharlE46
Are you sure all the cats have been removed and not just the one in the downpipe? Seems too quiet to me? Yep, just been out and double checked, correct decat front pipe, secondary cats & middle box all cut out with straight through pipes and looking at the backbox it has been cut open and rewelded - can't tell what has been done inside obviously. Looks like the previous owner was trying to get a bit more sound without spending any money!! If my budget stretched far enough it would be the BCS system for me Let us know how you get on this week with your quotes CJ

CharlE46
Weird, I would have expected it to be louder!? What does it sound like driving? When just cruising with the window up all I can hear is road noise, window down then it's just the wind and passing traffic, if I floor it I can hear the turbo on boost with a subtle underlying tone of 6cyl. I reckon when the backbox was cut open they packed more wadding in rather than strip it out LOL Next week I'm changing bits underneath so will remove the exhaust from the decat and see what that sounds like Sorry CJ for going O/T

No it wont! I dont know what hes done to that to make it sound like that but my car has the same and it sounds nothing like it! Mine wasnt even that loud when i had no boxes in it. Ive got an ecoyune decat with a standard system but with the second cats removed, the center box removed and the rear silencer has had all the glass packing removed and then ive fitted E30 M3 tail trims(which are similar to the standard 330ci ones) And it sounds like a petrol! Not loud as such just gives a nice deep note when you put your foot down CharlE46
Rich_D
So what the hell has been done to that one then to make it so loud??? This one sounds quite fruity too >>>
n0v0s
from my experience, the 2.9d sounds very much like the above with a fettled/straight exhaust, even at idle. Very deep and 'fruity' i found when my cat somehow managed to free itself from the rest of the system! However, the 'brutal csl' clip is defo an m57n. My 3.0d with a straight pipe (but primary cat present) on the other hand was more refined and only 'fruity' when under load and high rpm. Even then, with the windows up it was comparatively muted in tone. Still nice though. I can only think that it's to do with changes in the map, such as injection timing and duration in the case of the above 330d clip. Looks to smoke quite heavily. StuBeeDoo
I don't want to deviate from the standard exhaust on my 330d (done that with every car I've had for over 30 years, grown out of it now), but I do fancy the idea of having straight tips rather than the "blow-down" ones. Standard size, rolled-out, would suit me fine - E90-stylee.
