StuBeeDoo
..... Or "protection plates", as BMW call them. One of mine is loose and rattling, I need to have a proper look this morning, but I suspect it's rotted away around the bolts. I had a similar problem with my E30 and I just rived them both off and never bothered replacing them. Anyone running their E46 without the shields? Any issues doing so?? TIA Stuart. StuBeeDoo
I've had a look-see now. It is rotted around the bolts. I've cable-tied it for now as I CBA to take the caliper and disc off to remove the shield. I'll probably leave it as it is until I need to replace the discs (or wheel bearing). Thanks all for the input.

jdoe
Which is the best method lads ? Caliper off and tin snippers??
jdoe
The reason I ask if there's a better way with out pulling the hub, a truely foul food for thought,is bc I don't have any tin snips and this little bad boys going to be punching above its weight class lol
rasa
hack saw wille asy chew through but its getting leverage in an awkward space, and that awful screechong sound when the metal isnt tight and wobbling.little angle grinder maybe
jdoe
Actually managed to cut a large chunk of it away using our friend the bad boy to make a pilot cut and then expendable garden secaturs ands it much better just like that still rattled over bumps tho tons betters nows its going to be stupid difficult to get the rest of it with out the disc comming off so the question is which discs to upgrade to and in turn fit new disc shields with superior anti rust treat ment applied first
jdoe
I bent the Remaining flap over the ball joint the bj has a little house now and bent the bottom flap under bottom line for now no more scratching on disc squeeling while driving and turning and no weird cabin vibrations any more either
jdoe
I think the cabin vibration is directly connecTed to my stainless exhaust resonating the loose dust shield which was some how transmitting Up to the footwell / dash area
jdoe
And the why? .. bc the cable ties were on the shocks them self kind of glad.. car is so much nicer with just the dust shield cut down a bent out the way with the vibration 80% better in my cars cab you can half hear your self think lol thanks to all that got us here probably seems minor to you but to me its like a medical breakthrough heh Edited March 31, 2015 by jdoe
momo
No point starting a new thread - wanted to say how awesome is the SEARCH function? I have the exact same problem, so searched the forum and low and behold - I found this thread!! My driver side front shield has finally given up the ghost and is rattling like fooooooook! Only noticed it when I got home from work yesterday so gave it a prod through the wheel and it's very loose! I reckon it's rusted completely around one of the bolts. Sounds pretty bad going over bumps in the road. lol. I'll be ripping it off later this week during my "weekend".. StuBeeDoo
momo
Well, that didn't go to plan! Took it all apart easy enough to find that only the bolt holes had rusted! The rest of it looks as though it's almost new! There was me thinking it'd be rusted to hell so it'll crumble away.. Took caliper off, took carrier off and found the kn*bhead garage I used to use (who fitted my discs last time) rounded off the disc retaining screw! So that wasn't coming off without a fight! At this point I noticed the jack (OEM) and Jack stands were starting to sink into the asphalt type pavement.. The jack had twisted pretty badly too. Oh dear! Lol. (Note to self - use a block of wood next time). Thought f*ck it.. Cable tie it to secure it and stop it from rattling.. Whack it back together and get car safely back on the ground.. Lol. That'll do until I have to change discs again.. At which point I'll do it properly and replace shield, hub and disc retaining screw. Done about 10miles since and no issues! Thought f*ck it.. Cable tie it to secure it and stop it from rattling.. That's exactly the same scenario as mine. Done about 10miles since and no issues! I've done well over 3k so far with no probs. Done about 10miles since and no issone of mine was tied up with cable tie,it snapped,so i just tied it up again with some thickish copper wire and cable tie, still come loose ,so thats when i got rid ,needed new caliper at the time so guy who did caliper took them off momo
momo
I doubled up the cable ties on the front hole (had to do all 3). I'll keep an eye on it for now. Worst comes to worst I'll just get it all replaced.. Got my MOT in Sept so not too long. Thanks guys!

simonlpearce
Nothing wrong with running without, had to take them off my 19yo E36 recently as they were rotten and i fitted a BBK. They came off with relative ease though, just need to be persuasive, lol. momo
