Fitted a set of bootlid lights.
It solved a few dodgy light issues due to the amount of crap that had accumulated in the old broken lights.
-
Not today, but I finally fixed my odometer reset button using the little paperclip method
-
Well, I eventually got it working.
Nothing wrong with the laptop and nothing wrong with the lead.
Turns out that the obd port on the car was pushed up in behind the dash and I wasn't getting a decent connection to the plug.
The cover over the obd plug has a clip that ensures the plug stays firm against the cover. The clip had been undone on mine, hence the bad connection.

Ok a bit of an update and also a cry for help.
Finally got a laptop to install the bmcables software on, its running windows vista 32bit.
The software uploaded fine onto the laptop but when i try to use INPA when linked to the car it is coming up with a few errors;
IFH-0003: DATATRANSMISSION TO INTERFACE DISTURBED. Program will be stopped!
IFH-0009:NO RESPONSE FROM CONTROLUNIT. Program will be stopped!
ApiCheckJobStatus: Error #95
SYS-0005: OBJECT FILE NOT FOUND
API job error or no such result!
Continue script processing ?
Any ideas on what im doing wrong?
Thanks,
Anton

Isnt that part of the problem? You cant look at a ten year period on a planet that has been around for a few million years and declare that humans are causing the change. There could have been a similar ten year period of weird weather back in 20,000BC and not a car in sight....it's just impossible for us to say.You can be a climate change sceptic but just look at the weather patterns over the last 10 years or so, even if you just base this on the UK, we don't have 4 seasons anymore, it's either hot and sticky or cold, wet and miserable. 23 degrees + on Halloween, what the hell is that about?
Scientifically we havent even monitored weather patterns etc for more than 100 years.
Yes we have. And weather is not Climate the two are mutually exclusive.
We are analysing ice cores in the Arctic and Antarctic (that's why we are there, not just to meet penguins and Polar Bears) and these tell us a hell of a lot about the climate over the previous millions of years. Then there's the study of rock strata, ocean floors, evolution of life, missions to Mars etc.
If you honestly think for one second that an extra 4 billion human beings and their dependance on burning fossil fuels, chemically altering the ground we farm and the animals and plants that grow there, felling almost continent sized areas of forest and polluting the oceans with our waste and genetically changing the life within it has had no effect on the climate of this planet then you really need to open your eyes!
In the context of this discussion climate and weather sit hand in hand with one another.
I am well aware that humans are having an effect on the earth, i am not that niave and im not saying that we shouldnt be cleaning up our act.
That doesnt mean to say that we havent had extreme weather/ climate patterns in the past either that werent influenced by humans.
To suggest that we humans are the sole reason for changes in the climate then you really need to open your eyes.
Do you believe if we ceased all manufacturing/ cars/ pollution and wiped humans off the planet that everything would return to normal? In fact what is a normal climate for Earth?

Make - BMW
Model - 330d Sport
Year - May 2002
Mileage - 147k
Mods - None to date
Use - Road/ Daily driver
If doing more regular engine oil changes is there a non Longlife oil that you recommend?
I intend to change the oil regularly around 6-8k miles.
Also can you recommend a good diff & gearbox oil as well?
Thanks,

Thanks bungers.
Im still learning about these cars and the various sensors (Ive come from a 306 dturbo where one wire can start the thing and it has all but the basic of sensors).
Il get onto INPA this weekend and check the codes.
Can you elaborate on why a faulty brake pressure sensor would cause the car to pull to the right?
Would the incorrect readings from the faulty sensor cause the ABS to kick in on one wheel when it shouldn't?

, and for some reason, they all smell chemically - like a urine/chlorine mix. Not nice.
Thatl be the adblue which is basically an additive of pish....
-
@Cosmic - I believe there was slight camber on the passenger front before getting the alignment done and it had been wearing the inside of that tyre as a result.
Lower arms were replaced for MOT in June by the previous owner but I am tempted to stick some Powerflex polybushes in the lollipops.
Front and rear coil springs are fine, all dampers are ok except the rear passenger which is weeping.
I believe I have ruled out a seized caliper by refurbing all the calipers incl the rears so I don't think it is that.
@lozevans - I have a bmcable just haven't had the time to get it uploaded to the laptop but il do that this weekend and get the codes read.
Rear calipers were refurbed (new pistons & seals), discs and pads seem fine, everything was removed and cleaned up.
Thanks for the help lads and any more suggestions please keep them coming.
-
Il try and get one later.
-
You say the calipers where different, may be one has more bite than the other if ones slightly bigger?just a thought.
Exactly the same size as I eventually bought a refurb kit for both front calipers (pistons and seals). I had the same thoughts but I physically cant see why one should better than the other....
My next port of call is new discs and pads and if that doesnt work then new refurbed calipers although I hope I dont get to that point!

The readymade lollipop polybushes look like a good job. Should be very handy as there is no need to press out the old bushes.
2 bolts per bush and they are on.

Firstly bear with me ive searched and read various posts relating to the DSC/ ABS/ Handbrake lights being on (usually wheel speed sensor) but i have a few additional questions and queries relating to other issues that may or may not be related.
A bit of background on my car;
2002 330d sport.
Ever since ive had it it has pulled right under braking and so far ive replaced or did the following;
New tyres
Four wheel alignment
Outcome - no difference, still pulling under braking
Cleaned up the sliders and made sure the pistons were moving freely
Previous owner had fitted new discs & pads (unsure of brand) so left them be.
Outcome - helped slightly but eventually came back
New caliper refurb kit all round (Drivers side caliper seemed to have a different style of piston, it was the same size though so possibly the previous owner replaced one caliper)
Outcome - still pulling slightly
Swapped drivers pads & discs with passengers side and this has seemed to help a bit more, but still not perfect.
During all of this the infamous DSC/ ABS/ Handbrake light came on leaving my wife with a feeling of no brakes and the ABS kicking in when in slow moving traffic.
So after that essay my question is;
Could a faulty wheel speed sensor cause the uneven braking?
Could it be the ABS unit causing uneven braking? Is that even possible?
Or is it just coincedence that i have uneven braking and the DSC/ ABS/ Handbrake lights coming on ie two seperate but unrelated problems?
Again, sorry for the essay im just trying to give as much info as possible in the hope that someone can help.
Thanks in advance,
Anton

I asked the garage if I supplied the bushes would they fit them
(Had no intention of using them, just wanted to see what they would say.)
I can supply the bushes already in the lollypopso its only a matter of fitting them.Cheers.Here is their reply..!Good Morning,Unfortunately we cannot fit any parts we do not supply due to warranty reasons.Kind RegardsBallbags....avoid avoid avoid!

Not on an e46 but ive used powerflex on a set of 306 wishbones and they are still going strong some 80k miles later.
Il always use powerflex if they are available for the car rather than oem.
The powerflex bushes are also usually easier to install.
So far on my 330d ive done the RTAB's and plan to do the diff mount and lollipop bushes in powerflex.

If that's the way the saloon is as well then I reckon its double skinned where my dent is unfortunately.
My dent is just at that section where the large round indent is
-
Single on saloon too.
I tried to fix a dent on mine and did manage to make it worse!
I was in a mood though so didn't think it through and just used a narrow metal pole, which then made small pointy out bits instead!
As mine is quite a,large shallow dent I was going to wedge a deflated football between the wing and the headings and then inflate the ball forcing the dent out....

It's a saloon.
Thats good to know, I might try amd pop the dent out myself. It couldnt look any worse.

I have a big dent in my passenger rear quarter panel that id like removed. I am able to access it from the rear in the boot by removing the trim panel.
My question is are the rear quarter panels double skinned steel or just normal single skin?
Thanks

E46 330d 2002 - Coolant Leak
in Technical help (E46)
Posted · Edited by Antoin
A couple of weeks ago I discovered that the previous owner had used straight water in the cooling system rather than anti freeze. Due to the temps we were having at the time I hastily changed it to the correct mix of anti freeze.
I now seem to have a coolant leak coming from the join between the thermostat housing and where it meets the pipe that connects the thermostat to the radiator (Part Nr 3 in the link below) . Is this a common place for a leak to occur? Is the clip style system prone to failure?
I never touched this area when changing the coolant. Could the change to anti freeze have been an issue?

The car is a 2002 E46 330d with NO EGR cooler.
Thanks,
