I really don't know why I have a derv as I feck all miles... Around 3k a year atm... Really wish I bought an S6! :(

Looking tp change my job so this might change...

My wife's Yaris did 400 miles between the last MOT.

Considering selling the Yaris and buying a toy for myself and giving the A6 to my Mrs...

330ci is my daily (although it runs on LPG). Did the whole toy car -v- daily s**tter for years. Sometimes it was to save money, other times it was to protect my shiny toy from the everyday world, but mostly because when you have a high performance turbocharged something or other it inevitably breaks, and I needed a reliable knacker because I had to be able to get to work. Modified turbocharged cars tend to spend half their time emptying your wallet at the petrol pump and the rest of it emptying your wallet trying to fix it so it can resume it's abuse of the local petrol pumps lol.

I felt that way when I had a GTR. The Supra is more reliable than the 330 though

Yup I was on the GTR bandwagon too. '91 R32 - ended up with a smidge under 500bhp. Went like stink and loved it when it was on form but spent more time off the road needing fixing than actually on the road lol. Pulling out into outside lane on a slightly damp motorway at 70mph to overtake, dropping a gear and spinning all 4 wheels was *ahem* "interesting" though lolz  Supras are notoriously reliable - benefits of a much simpler RWD set up I guess!

Rather than doing the usual 'Jay' thing - buying an e46, spending loads of money on it, getting bored & selling it, I'm buying a daily s**tter to tinker with & that I can chuck crap in the back without worrying. Looking at a mk4 golf diesel or something on the same platform - will keep the vert nice & keep me from selling it!

I'm in exactly the same boat Jay, a friends got a mk4 1.9tdi Golf he's selling me which I'll put all my crappy business mileage on for now! Saves this one going to same way the Clubsport did.

in honesty, i drove my mates Leon FR Diesel the other night, for a daily driver it was nicer to drive than my e46 - i must admit, i do love the e46, even after 19 of them, but theyre nowt special to drive. a derv mk4 platform car to me felt better to drive on a daily basis!

I maintain that the Golf 4 was the most unpleasant car I've owned/had prolonged exposure too.

How do you make a car that wallowy not handle well and yet still fail to be that comfy? Surely you can get one of the three right?! Horrid engine too with terrible noise/refinement and shockingly poor power delivery (PD150, same as the Leon FR)

My 330d is my daily, but soon to be replaced.

hey, its an opinion! i dont need to say it again, how many have i had, but the e46 aint 'that' great to drive, i think the mk4 platform is very comfortable, the 130pd unit is a great engine which offers a helluva lot more economy than the e46 not to mention the tax, i'm not saying i'm ditching the e46 in favour of a mk4 based car, but like i say, i'd rather drive round in an old diesel & keep my vert for nice weekends etc.

We've done this. And while I agree, horses for courses, I think it gives him a more secure and reliable car, to get to his job to earn the money. Not to mention the tech in cars, better lights, sound, de-mister etc. It all adds up.

Anyway, £250/month is pocket change

And mine's an opinion too born from prolonged experience/ownership. Dynamically, the e46 is a much better car in every way (except for the gearbox), as well as being a nicer interior (subjective).

It won't be a PCP, it'd be a lease, and not on an electric Golf (although if I got a lease on a brand new electric car that I could charge for free at work, and which was cheaper to lease a month than paying for my own fuel, then I'm not sure I'd call that madness, unless I'm missing something :S )

Considering my 330d is on track to have cost £300 a year in deprecation (not inc. running costs/mods), I don't think I've done too badly on purchase costs so far. To have purchased/fixed/modified several iterations of the same thing over the same time frame, that, I'd consider madness. ;)

I am having a mental battle though about getting a new car. The cost is the biggest offputter, but do I wanna spend, say, £3-5k on a car that's full of someone else's problems? Not really, I've done that before. Or waste a large chunk of my house deposit savings on a (say) ~£10k car and have purchased something that's only going to go down in value, and still cost me if it goes wrong, and have eaten into my house fund in case something awesome pops up. That doesn't hold an appeal.

At least with leasing, the initial big outlay isn't there, and if there's a problem, it's up to someone else to fix... (And the spec of a new car would likely be better than something like another e46/e39/whatever.)

Mine and Sam's relationship isn't the subject of discussion here! :P
