Motorway services to serve alcohol

Recommended Posts

So who's going to calling in for a pint then?

Just saw this on the news this morning

The UK's first pub at a motorway service station opened its doors this morning. Pints were pulled at Beaconsfield services on the M40 from 4AM.

Hot food and soft drinks will also be served.

How many county mountys are going to be checking cars as they leave the services?

The problem I see is, most people won't have a pint if they're driving, as they're sensible people, these are the same people who get all of these adverts about drink driving rammed down their throat even when they don't do it.

The people who will figure 'why the hell not' are the people who will have 4 pints and drive home. So why not at a services?

The government should have stepped in here and asked why it was needed. I enjoy a pint as much as the next person, but can people really not go a motorway journey without the need for one? Having a nice pint with dinner after a days travelling is the bonus.

I agree save it till after your drive.

If someone wants to have a few beers then fine go for it but to then immediately drive on a motorway. Its the poor bugger that is caught up in the mess that I worry about

sent with tapatalk pro that mr feva can't use

I agree, but MOST people are sensible and won't do it. Of course there will always be some people but its not a large number. That's what my post was getting at. The minority causing issue for the majority (in that we have deaths by drink driving etc)

I don't want pubs on the motorway, it'll just encourage people to have a pint then do 200 miles. Whilst I don't like the idea full stop, driving at 70mph for 200 miles after a pint is different to a pint then driving 500 yards home.

it will be interesting to see this time next year if the number of DD cases in that locale have increased.

dont know what the numbers were for this year, but if it were a modest 5% increase, that to me is an advert that the bar should not be there.

there will also be a "novelty" factor now its open

I don't think its a big deal. People who want to drink and drive will find a way to do it anyway. The alcohol is for passengers really, and is not that different to just buying beers at the supermarket beforehand.

Sam you're trolling surely ? "Most" people are sensible, there will always be the halfwitted fools who arn't. Can you think of a more inappropriate place than a motorway for a dimwit to be half cut ?

Just think if there were pubs next to main roads........oh, wait a minute.

I am very anti drink drive and because of my job don't even drink the day before I work as I have to leave at 4:30 am etc etc etc

To be honest whilst I think is a dumb idea and will probably end up with their coffee sales far outstripping beer sales this is only an issue because it's on a motorway service area. I choose the A303 from London to Devon and back almost weekly over the m4/m5 route. I must drive past a dozen pubs and licenced restaurants. I've never been tempted to have a drink and neither have my passengers who do like to have a beer.

If someone's gonna drink they will do it. The only difference is it's putting temptation where it never existed before.

And if services food prices are anything to go by it will probably be £5+ a pint.

Services aren't just for cars. Think of all the hen & stag dos in minibuses, and coach trips where there are designated/professional drivers so passengers can drink to their heart's content.

If you want to drink, fine, if you don't then don't, I don't see what the big deal is.

So you don't think the consequences would be worse if we had drunks on the motorway ?

Yes Mit people will find a way, but why make it so easy for them ?

We do have drunks on the motorway. And it's already easy. There's a whole book about pubs that are within half a mile of a motorway.

Instead of banning everything wouldn't it be better if we were just educated well enough to resist the temptation where inappropriate?

Pubs don't kill people... People kill people!

Also can one of you mods correct the apostrophe in the title please?
