RichS Posted January 26, 2017 Author Report Share Posted January 26, 2017 One of the most annoying things about this touring is that it only had one key when i bought it, and it didn't work!! Seriously, it literally only started the car - it just span in the barrel and the remote element doesn't work. So three weeks ago i bought a cheap eBay lock repair kit (about £5) which came and i then spent hours watching the YouTube video tutorials.... and i set about fixing it. I hurt my hand, cut my fingers, broke a few nails and put it down and picked it back up for about 4 hours in total over the three week period.. and i can't bloody do it. Today I thought I'd give it one more chance and this time everything went into place perfectly and i took it out and refitted it to the car and OMG my car now locks and unlocks on the key! This is the best piece of DIY i have ever done!! The remote part still doesn't work but now i have a working door lock I can go and get a replacement key cut and coded from BMW for £140 all in and I'm set. Is all about opportunity cost - adding in diesel cost and time it costs me it makes better sense to get a genuine one from a local dealer with a two year guarantee. Megadodo Posted January 30, 2017 Report Share Posted January 30, 2017 It's nice to have that second key in the house somewhere, just in case you lose your one and only one! If the new key doesn't program in you may have an antennae or duplexor box issue. I'm not saying you did get it wrong but you do have to be quite precise in the sequence & timing of the key programming so if it doesn't work first time, try again. Remember that programming one key in will take any others out unless they are programmed in at the same time. Best of luck. I had a replacement key when I had my Cs, the chap from the Stealers came out to the car and programmed the key in a few seconds. RichS Posted March 14, 2017 Author Report Share Posted March 14, 2017 So a stressful few months in my life with signing the pub deal and then this touring's turbo forking the engine... but you can't say I'm a quitter!! A good secondhand engine was sourced and fitted, X5 wheels put on and the replacement key and lock barrel have all been done and the car flies once more... and looks the dogs too! What do you reckon?! But this is a workhorse, Daz, and it has already cost me thousands more than the asking price to keep it moving and it was never meant to be a looker - I have the vert for that!
