Spammers

Recommended Posts

Some of the other forums I use have a feature where your first 50 posts have to be authorised by a forum admin before they show on the site.

Is this worth looking at doing for here given that the spammers keep finding their way on here? Not necessarily 50 as that's a lot of work, but say first 10 maybe then they are good to go?

Having run a forum myself, which was a lot smaller that this one, I know how hard it can be to keep on top of things in your spare time. I'm sure the team here do their best, but I agree that spam is annoying.

I can't remember if membership here has to be validated by an admin/mod or not. If not, maybe it should be. If it is validated, perhaps what's needed is for a couple of checks to be included in the process - particularly on non-UK applications. Maybe just ask something like "What interests you about E46Zone?", or a question that anyone who has a genuine reason for being a member should know the answer to.

Although M3NXN it is a good suggestion, I figure the work load will be too much and will be frustrating for the new legit members. I joined a forum a while back which had something similar - first 10 posts had to be authorised but because authorisation took longer than a couple of hours I stopped posting there. Within a week my account was removed with an e-mail to notify me.

I agree with StuBeeDoo. Maybe a short questionnaire asking open questions which then is authorised by an admin makes the whole process more time efficient.

If they want to be part of the forum, they'll understand awaiting their posts being validated.

The problem with name validation is how does a mod decide if it's a spam name or not? Especially when you see some of the names cropping up! The problem with a short questionarre or question is it would need to be different each time to stop the spammers programming the bots with the correct answers. They wouldn't waste their time doing 10 posts just to gain access. I've also run several forums and understand how frustrating these spam bots are and how good they are at bypassing systems.

The question is a good idea, it would be straightforward to have a matrix of 100's of questions and corresponding answers that could be displayed at the time of sign up (random) - this is common on other sites already, providing you had a mix of enough questions they would not sit there and work out every possible combination & thus code the bots with the answers.

Also as already suggested an open ended question is a good idea (i.e. not one from a pick list) but will require more resource from an Admin point of view.
