Dash Cameras. What do you have ?

Isn't that mjn's car.

Dunno, but I did think I recognised it!

Just goes to show why you should never trust an e46's handbrake!

I'm no expert, but I'd say you should never trust a handbrake when it's loaded on a flatbed anyway. Strap it down!!

Has he got more than one then? Isn't the one he came to the meets in SP54 xxx?

Getting back OT, I've been watching "Bad Drivers of Newcastle" on YouTube and it started me thinking......... Do you suppose that if more of us had cams and all posted the footage online so that people could see what t**t drivers they are driving standards would improve??

In some cases, it may work, but I reckon there would be a lot who are just aggressive and will start getting abusive.

:o Pourquoi?? In 12 years on BMW-related forums I've never known anyone need driveshafts replaced.

The way I've hardwired mine is to use a fuse piggyback to the fuse board in the glove box to a switched live feed, earth off the glove box light, then buy a female cigarette lighter socket wire them to that and plug camera power end in. All hidden away very to do very cheap as well.

Thought it just as easy to revive this thread rather than start a new one.

I am trying to wire my dash cam in.

I have been running it straight from the cigarette lighter with no problems but I want a more permanent solution that doesn't need to be switched on/off.

So I am trying to wire it up as Feva has above, using a piggyback fuse on the fuseboard and a cigarette lighter socket.

Using the earth from the glovebox light too (although it does seem a small wire?)

The trouble I am having is I am "popping" the 2 amp fuse in the dash cam after a couple of seconds

Does anybody have any suggestions as to why and what I can do to rectify the problem?

Thanks :)

Bob I wired mine into a switch live feed. Not the cigarette lighter fuse (as it stays on) I used a 5amp fuse mines was and still is fine. Although I agree a 2amp fuse should be fine. I definitely used the earth for the glove box and I'm using the same wire in the e90.

Have you tried just temporary touching earth onto door hinge metal to test earth?

Hey mate,

It's plugged in to a switched live not the ciggie lighter one.

I am using a 5 amp fuse on the piggyback, the 2 amp fuse is in the end of the dash cam power lead (inline fuse in the end of the male ciggie power lead type thing).

When you say the glovebox light earth do you mean you tapped in to the actual brown wire?

Yeah I guess testing the earth would be the next logical step.

Right with you now. Mine (unless it's in the cigarette lighter plug) hasn't got a separate fuse. Yeah tapped into the brown earth (tested it first with multimeter)

This is it in the e90 (wire runs off to glove box earth)

I think the earth may not be man enough as it seems a small gauge wire compared to the rest.

Will have a look tomorrow and see if I can find another earth.

You tested earth against the body?

No it will have to wait until tomorrow after work as its dark and I can't be arsed to go out and try it now. :)
You never heard of the torch in mouth technique? Edited by feva

I think i may have damaged the lead somehow.

Just been out to the car and the dash cam is still popping fuses when I plugged it into the normal ciggie lighter that I have been using.

So it looks like my piggyback is ok after all :(
